Kulai in 1920, was originally known as Gui Lai mean arrival turtles. According to the history of hereditary, Kulai got its name by events when the arrival of the rainy season both sides of the River Kulai certainly flooded and consequently tens of turtles will appear on the cliffs and moving to town. This flood event also cause people also call it as Hainan Gui Lai. Evidence Gui Lai name can be seen on a signboard written in Chinese Railway station in Kulai. However, because of the difficulty of writing names in chinese language Gui Lai hence its name changed to Kulai, and it remains so today.
